The M.A. in Developmental and Adult Education is a thirty-nine hour program which provides the expertise and experience to supervise developmental and adult education programs in a variety of settings such as including public schools, colleges and universities, community-based organizations and agencies, and workplaces of all kinds.
Required coursework emphasizes adult learning and development; program administration and leadership, including needs assessment, design, implementation, management, and evaluation; research methodology; teaching adults; and multicultural perspectives in postsecondary and adult education. A supervised internship practicum is also required.

Thesis:
To come up with an idea for a thesis it may be helpful to keep a thesis ideas folder as an aid in the development of ideas and keeping track of information as it comes available. The folder could include notes, references, journals, reflections, and course assignments that relate to the thesis.
Students completing a thesi s need to download a copy of the. Texas State University Thesis and Dissertation Guide
It contains step-by-step procedures for writing a thesis. Also, the student will be under the guidance of a thesis committee. The committee will consist of the chair and two additional committee members. The student will enroll in DAE 5399A, the first in a series of two courses for the student who is pursuing the thesis option. While enrolled in DAE 5399A the student completes the thesis proposal, which consists of the first three chapters of the thesis. The student, who completes the proposal, successfully defends it, and makes recommended changes within the semester he/she is registered for DAE 5399A receives a grade of "PR" for progress. Following the successful completion of DAE 5399A, the student enrolls in DAE 5399B. Students must re-enroll in thesis every semester until the thesis and comprehensive exam options are successfully completed.
Internship:
One of the requirements for a major, minor or C.A.S. in Developmental and Adult Education is a supervised internship practicum. We suggest that you keep an ideas folder as you go through your coursework to record internship possibilities. The internship packet can be picked up in the Developmental and Adult Education office in room ASB South 322 of the Education building. See Dr. Hodges for more information about the internship practicum. Any student who plans to begin an internship must gain approval from the graduate advisor before registering.
DAE Minor:
The Minor in Developmental and Adult Education consists of fifteen hours taken in conjunction with an approved Texas State University graduate major. The Minor provides the expertise and experience to teach in a variety of developmental and adult education settings such as junior/community colleges, vocational/technical schools, universities, and private industry. Required coursework emphasizes developmental and adult education theory and practice; program design, management, and evaluation; the special characteristics and needs of under prepared learners; and teaching and learning strategies for reading, writing, and mathematics. A supervised practicum is also required.

The Certificate of Advanced Study (C.A.S.) in Developmental and Adult Education is appropriate for professionals who already possess an advanced degree and wish to acquire additional academic background relevant to teaching under prepared students.
