Some of this bias may be attributed to a focus on content (victimization) rather than process (VM). But the emphasis on victimization may also be the product of internalized stereotypes of GLB adolescents as victims. development of a greater understanding of the GLB adolescent experience. Like many graduate students, I naively exhibited much of the idealism and hope that fuel such efforts, and believed that my dissertation research would вmake a difference.г My initial review of the literature left me deeply discouraged. The bulk of the research looked like a list of victimization frequencies. What percentage of GLB youth experienced verbal aggression, threats, physical assault, or sexual assault? The numbers were all there, but they didnеt tell us anything that we didnеt already know. Yes, these numbers were important, and were particularly useful in testimony at the state capitol when fighting for GLB student rights. But the statistics only informed readers about what was being done to GLB adolescents. Missing from the literature were GLB high school experiences from a GLB perspective. With the guidance of my dissertation chair, I designed a qualitative study that asked a broad question: "What are the experiences of GLB youth?" I developed a set of interview questions and began the first of several meetings with GLB high school students. As the students' stories unfolded, I quickly became aware of how much the "victimization literature" had impacted me. Expecting my young research participants to rattle off a list of horrible things that had been done to them, I found myself surprised at how little emphasis such stories were given. Victimization was hardly absent from the interviews; almost every student reported histories of harassment and abuse. But more importantly, what emerged from the interviews was a sense that victimization is only part of the picture, that GLB adolescents are not passive punching bags, and that they take an active role in shaping their school experience. The study was not designed to test a specific hypothesis. Rather, the aim was to develop a theory about the GLB adolescent experience from the content of the interviews. What emerged was a process of negotiated identity that I call вvisibility managementг (VM). VM functions as a process that GLB adolescents use to actively monitor and regulate the degree to which they make visible their sexual minority status. Many strategies are employed, including selective verbal disclosure, carefully selected responses to questions, and nonverbal self-presentation strategies (e.g., dress, gait, etc.). VM is closely related to the concept of "coming out," but involves more than verbal disclosure. VM is an ongoing process that mitigates stigma, victimization, and harm. How did the participants in the study manage their visibility? Multiple strategies were employed and varied with participant characteristics and social contexts. Many students in the study dropped hints about their sexual orientation around friends to "test the waters" before deciding to disclose. For example, a sixteen-year-old lesbian participant, in an attempt to assess her heterosexual friendsе level of tolerance, made references to gay friends in hope of eliciting reactions. Those who seemed accepting were then judged to be safe for disclosure. Other students sought out teachers who were perceived as gay-friendly and disclosed to them. Symbolic communication, such as pink triangle buttons, was also used as a VM strategy. Interview after interview, participants told stories of how they navigated the often-hostile waters of high school as GLB students. What emerged from the interviews was a tremendous sense of GLB adolescent resilience. Their narratives clearly demonstrated that they do not passively accept the victimization that has been so thoroughly documented. On the contrary, GLB adolescents take charge of their lives, recognize the hostilities that are present, and actively regulate the degree to which their sexual orientation is made public. In doing so, they build valuable life skills that are likely to serve them well in multiple contexts. They are developing social skills that are needed to modulate communication across a variety of settings, as well as the ability to read the attitudes and opinions of others. The two-day agenda was full and interesting. We discussed a broad range of issues related to TCA and the counseling profession. Some of the highlights included: б Issues regarding inter-division and  intra-division communication б Increasing membership б The Emerging Leader Program б Tying division goals to the TCA  strategic plan б Becoming an advocate The general tone of the workshop was very positive and optimistic. As always there are many issues to consider and address including those specifically related to LGBT clients, students, and counselors. The TCA leadership was clearly aware of these issues and they were very open and receptive to the ideas and requests I submitted on behalf of our organization, including the need for more straight allies to become involved in TAGLBIC. Overall, it was a very positive and informative weekend, during which I was reminded of the importance of TCA and TAGLBIC. Finally, I would like to reiterate another important theme from the weekend, and that is the importance of getting folks involved in the leadership of TCA. We have begun to build a strong and active base of TAGLBIC members, but we need to continue building and growing. Please! Џ жчЏSччEvery student deserves a quality education in a safe, respectful learning environment. Despite the push in recent years for anti-violence and character education, name-calling remains one of the primary obstacles in the effort to create and maintain peaceful hallways and productive classrooms. Words hurt. More than that, they have the power а especially over time а to become a pattern. Without intervention, students can begin to feel unsafe to the point where they no longer are able to perform in school or conduct normal lives. This can be a problem for any student, but we all are too aware of how this issue can impact LGBT youth. Many of the derogatory words and phrases commonly used in schools today include slurs that refer to LGBT people. "That's so gay!" has become the putdown du jour in schools nationwide and "faggot" the ultimate insult for male students. Eighty-eight percent of the 1000 students interviewed in a 2001 national phone survey conducted by Hamilton college reported having heard classmates use "gay" as a derogatory term. Four out of five students in the 1999 Safe Schools Coalition survey who said they had experienced anti-LGBT harassment identified as heterosexual. It is clear that name-calling is a major problem about which we all should be concerned. That's why TAGLBIC is proud to be a part of the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network's No Name-Calling Week to be held March 1 through 8. As part of TCA, we will be working to get the word out to counselors all over the state about how they and their schools can become involved in this event. GLSEN and other activists organizations have come together to sponsor this event, which will target grades 5 through 8 through this pilot year. Each school that chooses to participate will receive with a "how to" packet to end name-calling in the schools. These packets should be available after the first of the year (2004). It has been a long time since I have sat down and written a letter to you. I apologize for the silence. For me, as Iеm sure is true for many of you, it has been a long year filled with both joy and pain. On September 3rd, 2002, my son, Brendan Nathaniel, was born. Daily he fills my heart with joy, making each moment wondrous and complete. In the midst of my joy, however, there was tremendous pain. Sadly, my father, my mentor and greatest inspiration, passed away in April. Although my parents live in Northern Ireland, in March, we were able to travel across the pond. Brendan was able to meet his grandfather, and I was blessed with the opportunity to say goodbye. Both life events took me far away from my normal schedule and daily tasks, a journey that I wonеt soon forget, one that has changed me forever, in ways Iеm sure that I donеt even know or understand. So again, I apologize for the long silence. Life events coupled with a financial hiccup at TCA headquarters prohibited us from sending out a newsletter in the spring. Life has slowed down to a dull roar for me, and HQ has corrected the discrepancies with the TAGLBIC account. So now, onward and upward! As I said in my last letter, I wouldnеt have to, nor could I try to, lead our organization by myself. As I tended to my family, Dr. Colleen Connolly stepped in and continued to help lead our division forward. She never wavered from our efforts to increase awareness within TCA about the needs of sexual minorities and their significant others. We met this goal last year by operating a booth at the fall conference in Austin and by co-hosting a professional luncheon with TMHCA and TAMFT. We also awarded our first TAGLBIC service award to a much deserving recipient, Don McCormick, Past President of TCA. In addition, there were many programs related to sexual minority concerns and issues. I am thankful to Colleen and the other members of our leadership team, Penny Sanders, Vanessa Schein-Joy, Pam Kessler, and Lisa Pearson, for helping to shoulder the responsibility of our growing division during this past year. And, when I say growing, I mean growing! We currently have 69 members! Hooray! And, weеre also growing our leadership team. Molly Behannon, Past President of TCA, has agreed to serve as our Director, and Feleshia Porter has graciously agreed to serve as our new Senator. Penny Sanders continues to steadfastly serve as our Secretary/Treasurer, and of course, Colleen Connolly continues to contribute in amazing ways in her role as Past President.
